Art in Grief

Please join Art Is Life Studio for Art in Grief, an event artfully honoring the grieving process from 6-10 p.m. April 21 at Yeager Office Suites of Plano.

I decided to co-produce this show with my Creative Assistant, Jaclyn Sartore, because I recently lost my beloved cat, Tiger Lily, after 14 years together. One thing that I had to get over was realizing that a loss is a loss, so when I was tempted to think she was just a cat she was so much more than that, because she was with me through very pinnacle times in my life. When we grieve we are experiencing loss of all kinds, not just a loving companion but an opportunity, a dream, a friendship or when we go through life-altering changes.

This show is an intimate event about working through the process through several art mediums and experiences. Our schedule of events includes a writing workshop, spoken word, guided meditation, and music. All materials will be provided for the workshop. Certified grief recovery specialist Linda Jones, The Writing Doula, will also be speaking about the misconceptions of the stages of grief. The wonderfully talented Lorynn the Redhead will be performing.

Current artist list includes:

Brassfly Studio, Myriah Garcia, Marilyn Vicente, Penelope Berg Paintings and Samax Amen

If you are interested in participating as a performer or speaker on our schedule, please contact us at jenice@artislife.gallery. Art will be on display in addition to the line-upand local vendors will be on site. If you would like to be a vendor, cost is $20 and limited to four tables. You can pay here: http://artislife.gallery/registration/artingriefvendor

Tickets are $12 at the door which includes a ticket for drawings. Light refreshments will be provided. Hope to see you there!

Be mIND valentine - Valentine's Party

Art Is Life Studio is hosting a Valentine’s party on Feb. 12 from 6-9 p.m. at it’s new location in Yeager Office Suites of Plano. We are really excited for this event because it will also serve as a fundraiser for the Brain Injury Network of Dallas, a non-profit organization we love.

Cost is $10 which includes FIVE raffle tickets to win awesome local offerings donated by everyone from local artists to professional services — some of which will be on hand selling some of their wonderful items! There will be live music from singer/songwriters Zach Pohl, Kelly Nygren and Lorynn The Redhead. And a special visit from Cupid who isn’t camera shy and we will be taking photos.

Unity Through Imagery

Please join us for “Unity Through Imagery” – a gathering and photo shoot from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 8 at Art Is Life Studio in Richardson. Art Is Life Studio is joining forces with Kevin Jackson, Sr., owner of Genesis Barber & Beauty Salon, for this event.

We spend a lot of time behind screens and being outraged with the things happening in the world around us. Let’s get together in person and show some solidarity through art. We are inviting anyone and everyone who wants to be the change to meet one another, create some understanding and unite as one. This is a time where it’s crucial to find allies in each other but first we must step out of our comfort zones and create the conversation.

You will be photographed with someone (or more than one) you don’t know. That is the point. You are meeting someone you wouldn’t have possibly met otherwise. There will be words you can pick together to hold up for the shoot if you’d like to send a message that resonates with you. All images will be photographed against a black backdrop and completely monochrome. The point is to show the similarities of our skin reflected in light and tone.

This event is FREE and all images will be downloadable on a website and available for purchase if you want prints. Donations to cover expenses are accepted but not required. Bring something to eat and share — the idea is that we are in a family reunion of sorts but with people you don’t know yet. Share food, thoughts, and hopefully laughs and love as we take this photographic journey together.

***If you are a makeup artist who would like to donate your time to this, please come!***

I will be providing a short lesson FREE OF CHARGE on how to use plants to clear and improve the energy around you and at home. Light snacks provided but feel free to bring your own for yourself or to share.

Darkness Into Light

Please join us for July's “Darkness into Light” on July 15 from 7-10 p.m. This is a monthly open house, open mic event where our intention is to erase the stigma attached to mental illness, addictions, anxiety or PTSD. This can only happen when we do it together.

Poetry, music, monologue or just sharing your experiences – all forms of expression are welcome. Although discussion is appreciated, we always encourage an art medium of some kind to share. We celebrate knowing that this isn’t how the story ends. We celebrate the brilliance, creativity and artistic ability that can come out through the dark. Whether you work through this using your own paths to healing, medication, diet or meditation, mental health affects everyone and is handled differently, person to person.

This is a FREE event but love offerings are always appreciated and accepted. You can also support this event by supporting artists who display their work at the studio – purchase your own one-of-a-kind art piece. It takes a lot of heart to run these events and a bit of cash to make sure folks have snacks and plenty of coffee and tea!

TRIGGER WARNING: Because of the encouraged openness of this event, you should be prepared to hear stories that you may find uncomfortable. Please respect any courageous speakers who choose to share. There will be instances where we will clear the energy naturally if you are hyper-sensitive and/or empathic.

If you are interested in participating or helping, please contact Jenice at artislifestudio@jenicejohnson.com or call 817-307-9384.

Please note: In keeping with the mission of the space as a safe place for recovery, no booze or drugs allowed.

LOCATION INFO: We have a sign now so you should be able to find us just fine. But if you end up over at Hope Speaks, head to the west side of the building. ;)

A Time For Mourning & Dialogue

These days, one does not have to look very far to see pain, to see racism, or to see those in mourning. So what do we do? Opening our ears, our hearts, and our eyes is a great place to start.

Whether you are black, white, hispanic, Christian, Atheist, Muslim, Agnostic, gay, straight, a police officer, or a civil rights activist, no matter your background or belief, please join us for a time of unity. This is a time to listen to each other, dialogue with each other, and a time to mourn and lament together.

Moderators: Pastor Angela Shannon & Josh Cogan

Ribbon Cutting with Plano Chamber of Commerce

Art Is Life Studio is now a proud member of the Plano Chamber of Commerce and is celebrating with a ribbon cutting! Perfect time because now there is an actual sign on our building. Although we are in Richardson, we are just minutes away from the Plano city limits. The chamber has already been an invaluable resource and I have made some great connections.

Please come help us celebrate this next chapter in business. There will be some yummy mocktails, 4x6 framed giveaways from Jenice’s Gummy World, snacks and amazing cupcakes from our friend, The Pastry SHAQ!
