Better When We Color Together

I think this month calls for a little lightening up so let’s color all about it. We haven’t had a coloring party in ages and I’m itching to do one. And these are times we should unite under a common good – cheeky coloring books! We will, of course, have some books on the tame side for those who don’t want to color curse words and the like.

This is, of course, an adults-only coloring party. Snacks and supplies are provided. We will be meeting in Conference Room 2 at Yeager Office Suites of Plano, where the studio is located, and given the room (Yeager is always busy!) space is limited this time to about 15 people. Book early! Sign up for your spot here: http://artislife.gallery/registration/coloring-parties

Art in Grief

Please join Art Is Life Studio for Art in Grief, an event artfully honoring the grieving process from 6-10 p.m. April 21 at Yeager Office Suites of Plano.

I decided to co-produce this show with my Creative Assistant, Jaclyn Sartore, because I recently lost my beloved cat, Tiger Lily, after 14 years together. One thing that I had to get over was realizing that a loss is a loss, so when I was tempted to think she was just a cat she was so much more than that, because she was with me through very pinnacle times in my life. When we grieve we are experiencing loss of all kinds, not just a loving companion but an opportunity, a dream, a friendship or when we go through life-altering changes.

This show is an intimate event about working through the process through several art mediums and experiences. Our schedule of events includes a writing workshop, spoken word, guided meditation, and music. All materials will be provided for the workshop. Grief counselor Linda Jones, The Writing Doula, will also be speaking about the misconceptions of the stages of grief. The wonderfully talented Lorynn the Redhead will be performing.

Current artist list includes: Brassfly Studio, Myriah Garcia, Marilyn Vicente, Penelope Berg Paintings and Samax Amen

If you are interested in participating as a performer or speaker on our schedule, please contact us at jenice@artislife.gallery. Art will be on display in addition to the line-upand local vendors will be on site. If you would like to be a vendor, cost is $20 and limited to four tables. You can pay here: http://artislife.gallery/registration/artingriefvendor

Tickets are $12 at the door which includes a ticket for drawings. Light refreshments will be provided. Hope to see you there!

Free Your Wings Writing Group

Meet with us from 6:30-9 p.m. April 13 in Conference Room 3 upstairs at Yeager Office Suites of Plano for the next installment of the Free Your Wings Writing Group. We grieve for many reasons: dreams delayed/denied, loss of a job, relationship, health, pet, etc. Working through every kind of grief is necessary to bring us back to our humanity and how we work through the challenges the Universe brings.

Art Is Life Studio is partnering with Kadena Tate for this new writing group focused on a journey to yourself. This month we will use photos as writing prompts and I will project them on the monitor.

This group is for you if you have something to say but you are not sure how to communicate it, if you’ve always wanted to write a memoir or a book or you simply want to become a better writer.

We come together to support one another’s writing and provide positive feedback so that you can accomplish your writing goals. During our time in person, along with online components if you wish to pursue them, we will use writing prompts and exercises to get your journey flowing. This is about creating a safe space for your ideas, creativity and writing to grow.

Light snacks provided. Investment is $10 if you pay ahead at the link on this event page and $20 at the door. Light refreshments provided.

In Bloom by Joshua Chapman

We are starting the NEW year with a brand NEW artist in our NEW location! We are debuting the artworks of Joshua Chapman in a show tittled “In Bloom” from 3-7 p.m. January 14 at Art Is Life Studio in the lovely Yeager Properties.

Joshua, 19, began painting less than a year ago and finds inspiration from the iconic artist, David Bowie. The themes of Joshua’s work are about past relationships, how he perceived them and how he has dealt with thoughts in his own mind. Some questions he has asked himself over this creative time in his life are, “Can flowers bloom from barren soul? Can I still love someone from a damaged head?”

Joshua is not afraid to admit that he deals with hallucinations, anxiety, depression and alcohol addiction. He said painting helps cope with past pain.

“I never really saw the world in color — everything looked really dull and drab before I started painting,” he said. “One day I was in awe of trees, the sky and all that I saw. I found a love of flowers and want to incorporate them in my work.”

Joshua’s favorite medium is watercolor and describes his art as abstract, but said he hopes, as he improves, that he can move more into surrealism.

“Painting makes me happy. Even if I don't like what I create — it is such a good feeling to do it,” he said. “I’m hoping that by showing vulnerability through my art, I may be able to help
someone experiencing the same issues.”

“In Bloom” is the first of many one-day-only shows at the studio and you don’t want to miss it. Refreshments will be served and as always, alcohol is not permitted.

Relocation Sale & Coloring Party

Hey, this is Jenice. Art Is Life Studio is moving to Yeager Properties of Plano next month and I am having a sale and coloring party from 5-10 p.m. November 19 as a send off. Of course this is very bittersweet. The new co-working location has a lot of possibilities. But this location I have been in for almost 2 years has been a haven. I will still host and co-host events as well as pop-up art openings in this new space. I am really going to miss my Richardson location but see so much potential for the future at Yeager.

I will have art, some furniture and other items for sale. There will be plenty to color and we will have snacks. Please bring cash, if you can. I accept credit cards but will charge for the nominal fee I have to pay to use Square services. I really hope to see you, as this is a come-and-go event. If I tear up, I’m fine. I’m fine!

Donations and kind words for this move are accepted.

THE OTHER STUFF IF YOU WANT TO READ:

You may wonder WHY PLANO? Well some folks were wondering WHY RICHARDSON, too. We live in North Garland, which isn’t far from either location and easily accessed for us. Contrary to what some may believe, I’ve had a lot of support from Plano-area folks and the Plano Chamber of Commerce has been a great part of that. I do recognize and appreciate the people from all over the Metroplex that have made the studio stay alive. There are art communities away from Dallas proper, even though we know Dallas is a huge, vibrant art city.

Bookclub and Potluck: "The Artist's Way"

Admittedly, I have tried to finish “The Artist’s Way” more than once. I have yet to do so! This book holds you creatively accountable and I hope we can hold each other accountable to work the exercises. Let’s meet from 1-3 on Oct. 22 and go over the first chapter – just to set the tone of us exploring the concepts of this book and our progress.

If you are not familiar with "The Artist's Way," written by Julia Cameron, it is a tool to help enhance your creativity – whether or not you are an artist. This book is the catalyst of the popular “morning pages,” an exercise in stream of consciousness writing.

Please bring a food item to share. Let's nosh and dive into this book!

MORE INFO:

“With the basic principle that creative expression is the natural direction of life, Julia Cameron and Mark Bryan lead you through a comprehensive 12-week program to recover your creativity from a variety of blocks, including limiting beliefs, fear, self-sabotage, jealousy, guilt, addictions and other inhibiting forces, replacing them with artistic confidence and productivity.
This book links creativity to spirituality by showing how to connect with the creative energies of the universe, and has, in the four years since its publication, spawned a remarkable number of support groups for artists dedicated to practicing the exercises it contains. --Amazon.com

Unity Through Imagery

Please join us for “Unity Through Imagery” – a gathering and photo shoot from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 8 at Art Is Life Studio in Richardson. Art Is Life Studio is joining forces with Kevin Jackson, Sr., owner of Genesis Barber & Beauty Salon, for this event.

We spend a lot of time behind screens and being outraged with the things happening in the world around us. Let’s get together in person and show some solidarity through art. We are inviting anyone and everyone who wants to be the change to meet one another, create some understanding and unite as one. This is a time where it’s crucial to find allies in each other but first we must step out of our comfort zones and create the conversation.

You will be photographed with someone (or more than one) you don’t know. That is the point. You are meeting someone you wouldn’t have possibly met otherwise. There will be words you can pick together to hold up for the shoot if you’d like to send a message that resonates with you. All images will be photographed against a black backdrop and completely monochrome. The point is to show the similarities of our skin reflected in light and tone.

This event is FREE and all images will be downloadable on a website and available for purchase if you want prints. Donations to cover expenses are accepted but not required. Bring something to eat and share — the idea is that we are in a family reunion of sorts but with people you don’t know yet. Share food, thoughts, and hopefully laughs and love as we take this photographic journey together.

***If you are a makeup artist who would like to donate your time to this, please come!***

Darkness Into Light

We skipped August but please join us for September's “Darkness into Light” on Sept. 30 from 7-10 p.m. This is a monthly to semi-monthly open house, open mic event where our intention is to erase the stigma attached to mental illness, addictions, anxiety or PTSD. This can only happen when we do it together.

Poetry, music, monologue or just sharing your experiences – all forms of expression are welcome. Although discussion is appreciated, we always encourage an art medium of some kind to share. We celebrate knowing that this isn’t how the story ends. We celebrate the brilliance, creativity and artistic ability that can come out through the dark. Whether you work through this using your own paths to healing, medication, diet or meditation, mental health affects everyone and is handled differently, person to person.

This is a FREE event but love offerings are always appreciated and accepted. You can also support this event by supporting artists who display their work at the studio – purchase your own one-of-a-kind art piece. It takes a lot of heart to run these events and a bit of cash to make sure folks have snacks and plenty of coffee and tea!

TRIGGER WARNING: Because of the encouraged openness of this event, you should be prepared to hear stories that you may find uncomfortable. Please respect any courageous speakers who choose to share. There will be instances where we will clear the energy naturally if you are hyper-sensitive and/or empathic.

If you are interested in participating or helping, please contact Jenice at artislifestudio@jenicejohnson.com or call 817-307-9384.

Please note: In keeping with the mission of the space as a safe place for recovery, no booze or drugs allowed.
